Talking Cure
I think that Holden Caulfield would respond well to the “talking cure” (therapy) because talking about his problems and issues may help to reduce the anger and/or pain he has from his life experiences. It seems like Holden’s problems began when his younger brother, Allie, died of leukemia. Holden punched out all the windows of the family’s garage. This was not an appropriate reaction to a family member’s death and it is the reason he is now in the mental institution.
If Holden is going to do the talking cure it may help him conquer his anger issues by letting out all the built up feelings that he has been keeping inside himself for a long time. If he releases the feeling by talking it may help him let go of the anger without being mean or violent. He is on the verge of being kicked out of school since he is flunking all of his classes but English. Since he is a good writer, talking to a therapist would probably be the best therapy for him as he is good with words.
I agree that the talking cure will be able to help Holden conquer his anger issues. Talking to a therapist will help him improve.
DeleteI disagree that the talking cure would help Holden
Deletei agree with Sean that the talking cure would work for Holden because when you get to talk to someone that has been though the same situation that you have and that will help you learn how they cope with losing a loved one also
DeleteI disagree Holden is to stubborn to talk about how he feels. I think he wouldn't even try it because he would call everyone a phony.
DeleteI disagree with Sean and agree with what Hannah said, Holden is way too stubborn and won't agree to therapy. He would honestly think that the therapist is a phony himself.

I believe that Holden could definitely benefit from the talking cure. Holden punched the windows out of his garage when he found out that his brother Allie passed away. This shows that Holden does not know how to cope and handle the tragic loss of his brother. Having an outlet to talk to would be the best thing for Holden, someone who cares and wants to hear how he's feeling.
If Holden were to use the talking cure and talk to a professional I think it would be great for him! Holden has shown the reader through out that he has a tendency to lie and be “phony” himself. He likes to manipulate people and the situations that they are in. Therefore I don’t think Holden should talk to a peer because he may not be honest about his feelings. If Holden were to talk to a professional he or she would be able to know when Holden is not telling the truth. He or she would also be able to give Holden fantastic advice and support. It seems to me that Holden needs to talk to someone that he can trust and receive no judgement. When he tried to talk to Akley who is a peer, he didn't want to listen, and he just didn't care. The best thing for Holden is to talk to a professional and someone who cares!
I agree that the talking cure and talking to a professional will be the best thing for Holden. He will be able to change himself for the better.
DeleteI agree that the talking cure will help him open up to others. The professionals wouldn't be there to judge but help him and I feel as though he would realize that.

I believe Holden Caulfield would benefit from talking to someone about his problems. The reason why I believe he can is because the talking cure is one of the best out there so people can talk out their decisions and points. Holden doesn't have a good connection with a lot of people so it would be hard for him to find a person to listen to him, a possibility is he can talk to one of the school counselor or psychiatrist.
Like I said the hard part for him to find someone because he doesn't get along with a lot of people so the only person he's got is Ackley to help him but Ackley is no help because Holden was trying to tell his story and Ackley kept cutting him off telling Holden about losing his virginity. When he does find someone he will talk out his decisions and turn that anger into something positive, he will also think before he acts because he’s not right in the head he may hurt someone or himself again like when the time he punched all the windows and injured himself. Holden has all this anger built in and calls everybody fake, phony etc. he will find himself in the process and understand what kind of person he really is and finally face reality.

Holden wouldn't genuinely benefit from the talking cure. The reason being that he is not very fond of expressing his feelings. For instance, quite often in the book Holden tells stories based upon his own perspective which can be dishonorable. Since Holden dislikes expressing his feelings, he’d rather lie then just be honest. One example in the story that proves Holden lies is when he simply tells the readers “I’m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life”.(Chapter 3 Pg. 16)
Another example that proves Holden lies to keep his feelings hidden is when he’s on the train talking to the mom of one of the Pency Prep students. He lies to present himself as a totally different person. This means he doesn't want to show people who he really was. These examples prove that the talking cure would not work for Holden. There would be no point of him talking because he most likely wouldn't express his true feelings and he would still he holding in how he really feels.
You bring a good argument Tamecia a very good one, yes I agree that he likes to lie or he can lie good, but he does like to keep to himself but considering he hasn't had very much people in his life so it's hard for him to to express himself to other people so he doesn't know how to act with people, but I love the way you credited your source.
DeleteI agree Tamecia with everything that your saying because it honestly makes since in my eyes.

Holden is the type of person that can be a liar and manipulator but I feel like he also has a genuine side. Dealing with the loss of a family member can be really hard for anyone and Holden decided to take his problems out on the windows in his house. He punched the glass and ended up in the hospital but that was his initial reaction. Holden doesn't really have anyone he can connect to because he is too busy calling everyone a “phony” and fake. The one person he is closest to is Ackley but Ackley does ever listen to him. Ackley is always cutting him off and making his problems more important than Holdens.
I feel like the “talking cure” would work for him as long as he finds a professional. I feel like Holden would lie to his friends and not really admit to what he’s going through because he wants to act like a “tough” guy. If he finds professional care and is able to talk about his problems and get advice and even medication, it will help him figure out what he has to do in order to find himself. The professionals won’t make him feel like he is being judged and will actually listen. He can learn how to let his anger out in positive ways, such as writing.
I agree Logan, this sounds like a great idea. The "talking cure" sounds perfect for Holden!
DeleteI agree with you the talking cure is a good idea. I think Holden could really benefit from this
DeleteI agree that the talking cure is a great idea, I just don't think he will follow through with it. He will most likely get sick of sitting down and listening to a therapist tell him what is wrong with him.

Holden does not seem like the type of person who would benefit from the 'talking cure'. He shows very little trust in anyone besides himself, constantly calling them 'phonies'. He lets his emotions take control, bottling them up and then exploding very violently. For example, when his little brother Allie died, he responded by punching out all of the windows of his garage, the anger and sadness overpowering him.
Another example would be when his roommate Stradlater came home from going out with his old friend/crush Jane Gallagher. Stradlater would not reveal any details of what they were doing, but it was hinted at being very inappropriate. This thought angers Holden, and again he reacts violently by trying to punch Stradlater. Clearly, he lets his emotions speak for themselves, and covers his anger and sadness by acting nonplussed and uncaring about everything. This would not be helped by the talking cure; it could only be helped with other forms of therapy. Perhaps writing things down, as we have seen that Holden does like to write (though he doesn't try in school). Maybe then Holden would have better reactions to things, and not act so violently.
I strongly agree with you that the talking cure won't work for Holden. Because of his lack of trust he decides to lie rather than express his true feelings.
DeleteI think the "talking cure" could help Holden, though I do see your point! He really does let his emotions get the best of him!
ReplyDeleteYes, I really think the “talking cure” would work for Holden. It would be great for him to sit in front of a therapist. Holden is very short tempered and you can see that he really has problems. It started when his little brother Allie died of Leukemia. After that his life went on a downward spiral, it really affected him. When he found about his brothers death he ran into the garage and punched out all the windows. As a symbol he keeps Allie’s baseball mitt, that's covered in poems.
ReplyDeleteI believe it would be very helpful if Holden received the “talking cure”. He Needs someone that really cares and would at-least be able to relate to him. It would be a great relief to him. He’d be able to let go of all the anger and sadness he has built up. I think he just needs someone he can really trust, and know there not a “phony”. So yes the talking cure would be a great option for him.
I agree with you Jahmeer. All Holden needs is just to sit down and talk about his problems. I also agree he needs a someone to trust because the only person he did was his brother and now he's gone.
DeleteI agree The talking cure is the best way for Holden to relax and talk about all his problems. All he needs right now is someone to trust.

ReplyDeleteI don't think Holden would have open arms to the idea of therapy. He doesn't like expressing himself towards others and bottles up his feelings. This isn't good because once he can't take enough, he blows up and this causes him to do things anti-productive. Holden should get therapy, it's just he needs to realize that he does. He needs to realize that although he thinks a lot of people, almost everyone,is a "phony", he himself is a phony. Here are some examples of how.
Holden shows signs of being a phony himself when he lies to adults. For example, when he is in the train with Ernest Morrows mom, he tells her he is the janitor when in reality he is just a student from Pencey who gets kicked out. Also he ignores the fact that he has a mental issue. He refuses to see any problem at all. Holden cannot see what is happening to him and hides it with his excuses and own masking thoughts. If Holden was to take a good look at himself, he would realize that he is not much different from the people he claims to be phony.
I strongly agree with you that the talking cure won't work. The reason why is because he doesn't like to express himself and would rather lie.

I definitely believe that the talking cure will benefit Holden. Holden is a troubled teen and he has a lot of angry emotions, fixations, and bad habits inside of him. It would be great for him to express his feelings to a therapist. When Holden gets kicked out from school he felt that success and inward fulfillment was taken away from him. As a result of that he began to fixate on another object to fill the void he felt. Which was a hunting hat.
Holden is a negative person and the talking cure will allow him to recognize that and change it. Holden thinks of himself as better than other people. People "depress" him. He is really just trying not to face how he really feels about the things around him. When Holden observes how women label men he doesn't realize is that by passing judgement on everything he is saying that he is superior to other people. His negative attitude is a form of protection from having to face his feelings over his brother's death. The talking cure will able to break that.
I completely agree with what you're saying. I believe that the talking cure will help him realize who he really is.

I honestly think that talking about your situation with some people it works because they need it but with a person like Holden it wouldn't work. He lies on just about everything so you wouldn't know when he's telling the truth or not.

ReplyDeleteI believe that Holden would not benefit from the talking cure. He is very hot headed and his way is the high way kind of guy. He doesn't do really seem like he would listen to someone else. If he was to try to talk someone he would just keep saying they are a "phony" over and over.
He has very big anger issues so I believe that he needs to talk to someone or get help but I don't think that he would benefit. Maybe if he admitted he was a phony then it would start to work but he is so hot headed that he won't.

ReplyDeleteI don't think Holden would feel it is a good idea to take therapy. Although Holden does not think he is angry and a phony you can tell he is throughout the book. If he did participate in the talking cure program, I don't think holden would benefit from this because he might think he has anything to talk about.
ReplyDeleteOne example from the text is when Holden tries to punch His roommate stradlater while he was brushing his teeth. Even Though he missed he still had the authority to punch him. He also ignores the fact that he has problems and because of this he holds all of his emotions inside. This causes him to release his anger when he is in a situation. Because of this, I wouldn't think Holden would benefit in the talking cure program.
I don’t believe that the Talking Cure would really help Holden at all. Holden’s view of people and almost everything else is a very cynical one. He hates and distrusts almost everyone, especially people older than. His past visit to a psychiatric hospital also shows he’s an unstable individual and may have deeper mental issues linked with the depression caused by his brother’s death. Holden would only get worse from talking, only changing something in his life could change him.
ReplyDeleteI do not necessarily feel like that is true. Holden may be rude and judgmental of others but maybe he just needs someone to be there for him rather than judge him.
DeleteI don't think Talk Cure will help Holden with his problems. Holden only cares for himself no one else. He doesn't really trust anyone but himself. So talking to someone wouldn't really be the right answer to his problems. Holden like to take his anger out by violence not talking. That's what I think about Holden getting help.
ReplyDeleteA example of this is when his brother died he punched out all the windows. Its shows he really isn't the one to talk when he is in a mental breakdown. A second example is when Stradlater rips Holden's paper he wrote for him. He just went to go punch him for no reason. Those are to examples why Talking Cure wouldn't help Holden.
I do not think the talking cure would benefit Holden because of how he is. He doesn't really care about anyone or himself. He doesn't care that he's not doing good in life. He just likes to get on everyone else's case and call them a phony but in reality he's a phony.
ReplyDeleteHe has a bunch of problems he has to get checked out for. He is also not in the best mental state. He has to come and realize that not everyone is phony and that he has issues and need helps.
