    Summer Reading Original Review

I chose to the “Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins because it is the third and final book of the Hunger Games Trilogy and I really enjoyed the first two books of the series. I had been waiting to read the final book ever since I finished the second book, “Catching Fire”. I liked the way this series was designed as if it is possible for this to occur in present day or the near future.

In this book, that is set in the fictional world of Panem after the last Quarter Quell competition. The action took place in the Capitol and the secret District 13. The story starts out with the rebels want to get rid of President Snow and his Peacekeepers who have been controlling everything in Panem. The rebels are hiding out in the secret District, planning their destructive strategies. The people of all the districts have come together to take down the Capitol because they are tired of being repressed. Katniss Everdeen, the Mockingjay, who is the symbol of the resistance, must decide if she will kill the dying President Snow. In the end she makes a difficult decision that changes Panem forever.

The weakness of this book, to me, is that it takes too long to get entertaining and draw the reader into the story. When the reader is finally drawn in, the climax of the story was disappointing. The author did not give enough details of what actually happened to several key characters like Katniss’s sister Prim who the reader finds out has died from an explosion. On the other hand, there are strengths to this book. It became entertaining when the action came with the rebels taking over the Capitol and the surprising twist near the end when Katniss made a decision that shocked everyone, including me.

Personally I did not like this book because the beginning was boring and drawn out and when the exciting part finally came, it was over too quickly. Even though it was fiction, I still found some of the things that happened to be not believeable. My fellow classmates who enjoyed the first two Hunger Games Trilogy books should probably read this final book of the series so they can see how it all worked out, but they should know that it is very different from the first two books. I would not recommend this book to someone who has not read the first two books of the series.

    1. I read the first book of the series but never got a chance to read the last ones. The first books were good to me but not the best. I feel like this one isn't going to be as good. I'm more into romantic novels rather than action packed!

    3. I haven't read the 2nd or 3rd books but I plan on doing so. This doesn't make me excited or eager to read the 3rd book at all because of the fact, that like you said "it takes too long to get entertaining".

    4. When I read the first two books, I really enjoyed them. So I am looking forward to reading the third one. Hopefully its not too bad of a beginning because I really would like to find out what happens.

    5. I have read both books and I do want to read the third one but you saying that it takes a long time to get entertaining make me a little worried about wasting my time in reading it when I could just watch the movie.

    6. I don't agree with Sean because, this was a really good book and so was the movie. You can;t judge the entire book based off of how the beginning starts. There's a lot of book that start off extremely boring in the beginning but towards the end it turns out to be really good and interesting.

What influenced my decision on the book? Well I was sitting in my advisory and Mr. David has a book shelf and I knew I only had 5 days to read. What I knew from the book “of mice and men” was it was a good classic novel and it was short enough to read in time, and Mr. David told me it was a good book.

The book is about 2 men Lennie and George. Lennie is the huge, big, and strong on but is has a mental disability so he’s slower than most people and thinks like a kid, George is the more intelligent, and smaller one. What takes place is the 2 men are in search of a job and times are tough because this book takes place during the great depression. What happened is they’re mission is to live on the ranch when they make money but have set backs like getting ran out of town by police for doing “something” and that “something” I will not say because you have to read this book yourself. So they work for a land owner that owns grain and the men there lift and carry the grains on the truck and deal with many antagonists.

I would have to say that the strengths and weaknesses are the same thing. What it is, is the detail of describing something because in the beginning the author described the scene too much in my opinion and took a while for the book to start off and I hate when the books takes forever to get good. The good part about the details are when the author describes something you also get this great image in my head of what it looks like when they were in there barracks playing cards the author described it very well of what George was doing and the tension when drama stirred which is good because I love having a mental image in my head.

I would actually recommend this book to classmates because it’s a very good book. I believe they should only read this book if the person likes a story about friendship, freedom, and a little struggle but if you do not like any of these you will most likely hate this book. I am suggesting it because I like those 3 things and its great and I want people to enjoy the same feeling I had when I read this book.

The book i read was called “Shelter” by Harlan Coben. I actually didnt choose it my Grandma had chose it for me. The beginning of the summer i read the first page. I didn't find it quite interesting, but i came back to it and read more. My Grandma kept telling me this author wrote good books. So i said why not and gave it a try.

This book is full of twist and turns. It starts off about the main character Mickey Bolitar, he has so much on his mind. His dad died, his moms a drug addict, and his girlfriend is missing. Then on his way to school the old creepy lady on his block comes out and tells him his father is still alive. This is only one of the mysteries Mickey faces.

This book had so many strengths. In my opinion it only had one weakness and that's that the book started off slow. The first couple pages doesn't really seem interesting. Thats the only thing i would have did better. i would have made chapter 1 more interesting. So it grabs readers, and show them this is a good choice for a book. The rest of the book was excellent. One of my favorite parts are when Mickey meets his friends Ema, and Spoon. Also, when the old lady comes out and tells him his dad is still alive, after he witnessed him die.

I would recommend this book to anyone. Its a young adult book. Full of mysteries at every turn. Once you get past the first 2 chapters, you won't be able to put it down. Also, its a serious once you read the first book you're addicted. It always keeps you on your toes, and has you thinking. Theirs never a dull moment at all in this book. Its a quick read to its not very long. Its one of the best books I've ever read so far.

    4. Jahmeer I don't think this book will grab me, I love surprises and twists and turns but the summary sounds dull and depressing... and I like books that are positive and entertaining this one doesn't call out to me. In the end I may read this book for the mysteries.

During this summer I read a book called All I Need by Susane Colasati. I selected this book because of the adorable cover, it caught my eye. On the cover there is a boy and a girl hugging on the beach near a heart drew in the sand. In this book there is an 18 year old boy named Seth, he is broken hearted, confused and lonely. His highschool girlfriend broke up with him on graduation day, his mom and dad split up and he hates his college major. At the beach he meets a girl named Skye. Skye is a free spirited happy girl that comes from a wealthy and stable family. These two people are complete opposites but the perfect match.

In Colasanti’s book there are many strengths and weaknesses. I love how the story is told from both Skye’s and Seth’s point of view. Each chapter is told from first Sykes's point of view. Then the next chapter is told from Seth’s point of view on the situation. This made the book very unique and fun to read. This makes the book more interesting because you get to see a girls perspective and also a boys perspective on their relationship. I also liked that the book was easy to follow and understand. The author used some detail in All I Need, but some details were left up to the reader to decide. I really enjoyed that I got to use my imagination for some of the details, that made it feel more personable. The book had great quotes too! I loved this one, “I’m living in the now. The now is we all ever had.” This book only had one negative, it ended way too soon! I wish that the book was much longer!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a romantic novel. Even if the reader doesn't like romance novels the reader can also learn valuable life lessons. The book teaches the reader about school, life, and friendships too! The book was an overall great read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an awesome book!

Over the summer, I read For One More Day by Mitch Albom. My friend recommended one of his other books to me and I loved it so much that I decided to go for another one. This short story captures reality and how it can hit you really hard when one thing doesn't go as planned. The book tells the story of Charley "Chick" Benetto, a former baseball player who encounters a whole lot of problems with his career, money, family and alcohol abuse. This leads him to become suicidal. Charles goes on a drunken rampage and decides he is going to end his life in his old home town. When his suicide doesn't turn out as planned, he turns around driving down the wrong side of the highway and causes an accident. Charley had a near death experience and was able to talk to his deceased mom who died 8 years prior. His mother explains why his life was the way it was when he was a child. He apologizes to his mom for everything he did and most likely felt a sense of closure instead of worry and guilt.

Throughout Albom's book I noticed some strengths and weaknesses. Some of the weaknesses were involving the beginning of the book. In the beginning you can't quite figure out who is narrating. Its not till the end that you are told that the whole entire story is narrated by Charley’s daughter. They don't really bring her up in the book or explain why she is narrating so its confusing. Another weakness is how the book is written in 3rd person. Its hard to understand how the character feels when someone else is describing his life for him. I am the kind of reader that likes to know and understand how the characters are feeling and what's going on in their minds. The last weakness is that it does not have an eye-catching cover. Usually books with a cute cover make me more interested. Some strengths of the book are that the book its a quick read. The chapters are short so it makes you intrigued that you can “read the next chapter really quick” and by no time, the book is over and you fall in love and want to read it five more times. Another strength is that he is very descriptive, by creating an image in the readers head. For me, I like having the picture made for me rather than making one up.

I absolutely without a doubt recommend this novel to everyone and anyone. This book is an awesome, quick and truly life changing book and you won't be able to put it down. If you're into really descriptive books that are a quick read, then yeah its the perfect story for you. Although the cover isnt quite interesting, its the inside that counts, right? As they always say, don't judge a book by its cover. The storyline of the book makes you really think twice about how truly important your life is and how you can't ever take it for granted.. Anyone who reads the book could either relate or feel the mood that the narrator is trying to provide to the reader. Throughout the whole entire the book the main question is “What would you do if you lost a loved one and you had one more day to talk with them?” That essential question makes you think and compare to the main character and how he handles everything.

What influenced your decision? What influenced my decision to read this book was just simply the fact that i love scary stuff. I love horror novels, horror movies, and that type of stuff. I find them very interesting and entertaining to read, since its always keeps me wanting to read more and more.

The story is basically in the point of view of one of the characters Francis crozier. The captain wants a seaman who fears the lower docks to follow his orders and do as told. The crew is on there way to king William island where myths have been told there is some type of monster lurks on the putrid sea ice. The weather changes very horribly and colder as they get further to the island where rumors of terror awaits. After chapter 1 the story changes narrators to several years to the past.

The strengths in this novel in my opinion is the constants foreshadowing of each chapter. Each chapter always keeps you wanting to know and read more constantly. For example in the novel when weather got colder and noises from different directions were being heard it made you want to know if the myths are actually true.

A weakness in the novel in my point of view would have to be the constant switching of narrators in different parts of the chapters. In my opinion it was kind of difficult keeping up with the constant switching and it got me confused at times. You got used to it most of the time however, so it played out well on the most part. For example, when you were reading in the narration of captain francis and it just switched very quickly of the start of the new chapter.

I do think my classmates should read this book. In my opinion it is a very well written book by Dan Simmons. It provides a lot of details in each chapter and it is a very entertaining and foreshadowing book. If i could, i would recommend this book to everyone.

My summer reading book choice was “Homeroom Diaries” by James Patterson.
This new book caught my interest by the idea of its high school setting, and how it is based upon a girl called “Cuckoo’s ” interesting life. Her type confusing life consists of her group of friends called “ the Freakshow”, an old lady by the name of Mrs.Morris, and her imaginary boyfriend Lawrence. These are people that will either make her or break her, help her or doubt her, or simply just be her friend.

The strongest parts of the story are how interesting of a life the main character, Cuckoo Clarke possesses. You will go through her ups and downs of high school as well as learn why she’s such an unbalanced person. Rather its the numerous trips to the psychiatric hospital or the idea of her not being able to ascertain where in the world her mom has rambled off to.

The weaker parts of the story include the transitioning of the story. Even though it is not a long book, there are occasions where it seems to take forever for a day in Cuckoo’s life to go by. Nevertheless, the story is still very enjoyable and will guaranteed keep you thinking as well as laughing.

I would strongly recommend this “fiction diary” story to any and everyone. Not only is it an easy read book, but you will be entertained throughout the entire story. Because of the stories modern day timing, it can be easily relatable and quite understandable. One may even apprehend some great advice as they read.

I selected this book when i was in the library and mrs howard picked the book out of the two books that I had. The book is about a boy name Clay that was in a school with bad kids. Clay had this cousin named addison and they grew up right across the street from each other so they grew up like brothers until a problem arose within the family. After that they rarely saw each other until addison got put into the school they were at. While at the school daytop addison wasn't letting any of the stuff affect him he was still selling drugs and on the night when all the parents was suppose to come in and while addison and clay were getting of the elevator and addison saw someone that owed him money and he started chasing after him until they got to the rooftop and thats all I can but the story got real after that.

The strengths of the book is that its the kind of my style book like mystery and crime and allows you to understand the strength of family and other things like that. The weaknesses of the book is that it a little shorter than I wanted it to be when i started reading it. The book makes you wait for a lot of things like when they got to the top of the roof it took like three pages for it to say what happened. Another example of that was at the beginning when they were talking about what happened with them and the first time addison and clay saw each other in a long time it took them a while to get to when they sat down and had a conversation about everything and you could feel the tension just by reading the book.

I would say if you get a chance to read the book like if you get put on punishment or something you should read the book because it will make your punishment or just if you have any free time go by really fast. This book also cover all relevant things that are going on today like racial profiling and lying to try and cover up something or not tell the full complete truth about something. I'm suggesting this book because I really do not like reading books but this book was one that I enjoyed and wish it was longer so I could have kept reading it.

  11. The book I chose was the book Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. The reason I chose this book was because I had a copy of it in my book shelf. The title also was one of the reasons because it made me wonder about who got kidnapped. I like mystery I guess you can say. I am a very nosey person anyway.
This book is about David Balfour, he is 17 years old and has lost both parents. David was living in the orphanage until he decided it was time to go live his life but before he leaves he goes to his guardian who tells him that his uncle is a wealthy man. David then goes out to look for him. His uncle is curious to hear about how his brother died but then betrays David.
The books had a couple of strengths and weaknesses. I will start with the weaknesses first. The first one is that the book is based in like the medieval times, this isn't a big deal but I usually like it to be more modern because I can relate to it more. Another weakness is that the book was kinda confusing at times. However there are more strengths to this book. The first one is that the author really catches your attention with so much things going on in the beginning. The book never really gets dull either. The next strength is that the ending of the book to me is very good and I loved how it ended. If anything could've been better it would be the time it took place like I said before.
I would defiantly recommend this book to someone who likes mystery novels. It defiantly isn't for everyone though, but if you're trying to get into different genres then this is the book that will get you loving mystery books. I would recommend it because of how much I liked it and if I liked reading a book then it must've been good. This is the book I read and why I recommend it.

    Summer Reading

The book i chose to read for my summer reading assignment was Rucker Park setup by Paul Volponi. Choosing the book was the hardest thing i had to do. I had no idea I what I wanted to read for this assignment. I walked up and down all through the library and this book happened to catch my eyes. I began to read the back of the book of it to get an overview of the book. After reading the summary I knew this was the book i was going to read for my summer reading assignment.

The book rucker park setup is mainly about a Mackey and his friend J.R. Both J R and Mackey love playing basketball. In fact, they are both suppose to be participating in championship game that takes place at their park every year. Not to long before the game, Jr is killed and Mackey blames himself for not sticking up for for best friend when he needed him most. Mackey will now have to play in the championship game while dealing with the fact that his friend is dead and it is his fault because of it.

There were some strengths and weaknesses in the book Rucker Park Setup. One weakness was that the narrator was having flashbacks of him and J R while playing in the championship game. For example, Mackey would be talking about the things happening in the game, then moments later he would switch back to talking about things him and J.R. use to do together before he died. Even though this happened there were still strengths in the book. The plot was great and even though I got confused with the flashbacks I was always engaged in the book. I would recommend my classmates to read this book. I think they should read this book because the overall story has a great plot and theme.I wouldn't recommend it for everybody but anyone who play or likes basketball would really enjoy reading this story.

As usual, I told myself over the summer “I’m probably not going need to do summer reading”. And as usual I was wrong, so when a reading project was announced I turned to my always loyal friend Netflix for help and inspiration. In the recently viewed list I saw a movie I remembered enjoying alot actully, called The Way Back starring Colin Farrell and a bunch of other famous people I’ve never heard of. It followed the story of several prisoners who escaped from a Soviet Russian labor camp in Siberia to freedom in India sometime in the 1940s. I was lucky when I learned that it was based on a book, titled The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz, and that the book was based on a true story. I later learned that the “true story” part is actually up for debate but that doesn't matter right now.

I got my hands on the book and got through it pretty quick. Luckily for me again the book and movie were pretty similar so I knew the general plot well and only needed to learn a few changes in character names. The book starts off in 1940 with Slavomir, then a Polish army officer imprisoned by the russian secret police and accused of being a spy. After a series of trials, abuses and a generally unpleasant time in the Russian prison system Slavomir is sent to a forced labor camp in beautiful Siberia. There he meets several other prisoners and eventually they all escape from the man made horrors of the camp to the natural horrors of the Siberian wilderness. The rest of the stories sees the group travel through a frozen wasteland, to a not-so-frozen wasteland, to a desert and eventually back to another frozen wasteland.

My biggest issue with Slavomir’s version of the story is that I had a hard time really caring about the other characters. The story is a memoir so we only get Slavomir’s point of view whatever is going on in his head. Because of that I didn’t really know too much about the others in the group and therefore couldn't care about them. One group member, an American prisoner known only as Mr.Smith, was a character whose story I would have liked to read. But in the book he seems to only exist as the groups leader and human compass. If this were fiction it would look like the other characters were there to keep Slavomir from going insane from isolation and nothing else. I only learned a little as to why some of these people were there and who they were before their time in the camp and I thought thats bad. The only thing that I can say I did like was that it didn't bore me. There was always something happening that put the groups survival at risk and despite not knowing these characters I felt for each of them and wanted to see them all go home alive. And despite being set in a historically important time, it didn't bore me with tons of history lessons, explaining just enough for me to know what was going on and nothing more. Personally I’d tell you skip the book and just watch the movie. The book is short, only 270 pages, but there are parts at the beginning where a whole lot of nothing happens. Use this book as quick and generally decent inspirational read based on a not-really true story.

This summer I chose the book The fault in our stars by John Green. A lot of people around me were reading the book and then it became a film. When I saw the movie it was very well done and the actors are some if my favorite now but the reason I decided to read this book is because I am very interested in the mind set of a cancer patient and how they chose to deal and live with what they had. Was there anything different about a teenagers wants and attractions when they are dying or do they still care and love the same? So sitting on the beach one day I decided to read it and this is how I felt.
Hazel Grace Lancaster was a teenage cancer patient, and, though she had many instances where she was close to death throughout her life seemed to be witty and strong. One day Hazel meets Agustus Waters who was with a mutual friend, at a cancer support group. Agustus was wise and had these amazing metaphors for life. He was also a cancer patient who had lost part of his leg was cancer free at the moment and determined to get the affection of Hazel Grace. Throughout the book Hazel doesn't want to get involved she knows she will die and it will hurt to much. They found a mutual love for a book called An Imperial Afliction by Peter Van Houten, which Agustus and Hazel go to meet only to find out he is a nasty drunk. Hazel and Augustus fall in love of course and have normal teenage lives but they seem to mean so much more and be deeper then anything I have heard of. Only to end in a very tragic unexpected way. But still the strength of both of them shines through.
Many moments in this book stuck out to me a lot of them really funny like when Agustus and Hazel bring their blind friend to egg his ex girlfriends house and her mother walks out and Agustus says something like " all together we have 2 working lungs 2 working eyes and 5 and a half legs and she shouldn't mess with them" and she runs back into the house. But then there was also the metaphor of the cigarettes that Agustus had, he would put on in between his lips and say "you put the killing thing in between your lips but don't give it the power to kill you." Hazel would always say that she is a grenade about to explode and that's why she didn't want to be with him but in the end it turns out different.
I would reccomend this book to everyone boy, girl, anyone. It had an impact in me and got rid of some feeling bad for myself feelings kind of brought me down to earth a little. I would even reccomend seeing the movie after because it is about the same exact thing word wise and still had that funny witty edge to it like the book had. This book was deffinently worth the read.

  16. The book I read was the Fault In are Stars. I read this book because I heard it was a amazing book. I also wanted to read it before i saw the movie. My Girlfriend same the commercial for the movie and wanted to see it. So I had to read the book fast before I saw the movie. Best thing was the book wasn't that hard to read!

The book is about a girl named Hazel. She has lung cancer at 16. She goes to a support group with other cancer people. One day when she was going to support group she ran into this guy named Augustus Waters. The started out as friends than got very close. They never leave each others side. they travel together and tragedy strikes when they get back.

I think every part of the book is a strength to me. I don't think that there was one bad part of the book. It was attention-grabbing from the start. The story is romantic yet sad story at the same time. I recommend this book because of how interesting and attention grabbing it was.

  17. I am definitely interested in this book. I love romantic genre books and I'm curious to see what happens when Hazel and Augustus get back from traveling. The fact that there is a movie based off this book makes me more eager to read it then watch it.
